From 1820 to 1826, the famous mathematician Carl Friedrich Gauss led the “Hannoversche Landesaufnahme”, a precise survey of the Kingdom of Hanover. In doing so, he was the first to apply the method of ‘triangulation’, in which the area is determined using a network of triangles.
Exactly 200 years later, Hamza Alkhatib, who was born in Syria, teaches students about triangulation and modern geodetic surveying methods. “In fact, Gauss was the reason I came to Germany. I have always admired his work,” says Alkhatib.
A qualified civil engineer and geodesist, he has been head of a research group at the Geodetic Institute Hannover (GIH) since September 2007, specialising in expert-supported data analysis and quality processes, engineering geodesy and geodetic evaluation methods. He completed his habilitation thesis on “Advanced Methods and Algorithms for Computer-Aided Geodetic Data Analysis” at the GIH at the end of 2020.
In his research and teaching, Prof. Alkhatib currently focuses in particular on modern geodetic analysis methods, sensor fusion, probabilistic data analysis and the application of machine learning in engineering geodesy and robotics.
Prof. Alkhatib is also active in various international and national professional organisations and serves as a peer reviewer for a number of international journals.
“Außerplanmäßiger Professor” (apl.-Prof.) is a prestigious academic title awarded to highly qualified senior lecturers and researchers who have demonstrated consistent excellence in both research and teaching over several years.
