Regional Gravity Field and Geoid Modelling

The Institute of Geodesy (IfE) has been involved with high-resolution and high-precision gravity field modelling since the 1970’s. Thus the computation of high-resolution gravity field models at IfE has a long tradition.

The geoid and quasigeoid models became particularly important for Germany and Europe:

IfE first published a high-resolution gravimetric quasigeoid model for the western (old) federal states of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1989, and since about the mid-1990s corresponding calculations have been carried out in cooperation with the Federal Office of Cartography and Geodesy (BKG). The cooperation with the BKG resulted in first results from the year 2000 as well as the models GCG2005, GCG2011 and GCG2016 (GCG - German Combined Geoid), which contain gravimetric measurements as well as GNSS and levelling data.

European geoid and quasigeoid calculations began at IfE in the early 1980s with the help of mean gravity values. With the support of the International Association for Geodesy (IAG), high-resolution point gravity data were included from 1990 onwards and regularly processed into corresponding geoid and quasigeoid models. The solutions EGG1997 (European Gravimetric (Quasi)Geoid 1997), EGG2008 and EGG2015 became more important.
