Quasigeoid for the Federal Republic of Germany - German Combined Geoid 2016 (GCG2016)

The Federal Agency for Cartography and Geodesy (BKG) and the Institute of Geodesy (IfE) cooperate since 1990 on the computation of a new high-resolution quasigeoid model for Germany with centimeter accuracy.

Several recommendations from the Working Committee of the Surveying Authorities of the states of the Federal Republic of Germany (AdV) exist on this topic. In 2005, BKG and IfE performed a complete re-computation based on all available data sets (gravity, terrain, global geopotential model, GPS/levelling). One of the main reasons for the re-computation was the introduction of new coordinates for the SAPOS GPS reference stations (recommendation from AdV in 2003). The final solution was computed as the average of the two individual solutions from BKG and IfE and is updated regularly by the Geodatenzentrum at the BKG as the German Combined (Quasi)Geoid (GCG). The current version is CGC2016.

This model is compatible with the terrestrial reference system ETRS89 (SAPOS realization 2016) and the  physical heights in the system DHHN92 (normal heights) and serves as a standard for the height transformation in Germany.
