Abstract

A new theory for the group delay in VLBI is presented. It is based upon a consistent formulation of reference systems in the (first) post-Newtonian framework which has recently been introduced by Damour et al. [Les Journées 1990 (1990); Phys. Rev. D (1991) (in press)]. This formulation leads to improved relations between barycentric and geocentric quantities. The final result for the group delay has an accuracy of better than 1 ps thereby improving results which have been published earlier.
